Abalone Shells
Although they can certainly be used for more than Burning Incense/Smudges they do make ideal burners. Representing water they bring that element into you prayer and ritual.
When using as a burner it is important to add an inch or two of sand in the bottom as the charcoal will make it Very Hot and can burn the surface it's set on and you hands. Using sand greatly takes care of that!
To keep charcoal easy to light, store in a jar with about 1 inch of rice in the bottom and a tight closing lid. Cheap dehumidifier and keeps your charcoal fresh and dry!
Some forms of incense, Resins in particular require this type of charcoal to be burned. Actually Resins need to melt and vaporise as if you try to burn them by direct flame your wasting the resin and the results are not as they should be. This type of incense burning goes back thousands of years and is the purest form of incense burning. Little more work but so worth the results!
Also works great for herbs incense such as Native American incenses now called Smudges. (though literally this always made the Elders we knew giggle at the choice of words)
When using charcoal some care should be taken as charcoal gets hot 350 degrees F. So the burner should have an inch or two of sand that lives in the base of the bowl. This insures that the bowl and the surface you're resting it on do not get too hot to handle and burn anything!
