In blue cardboard, gilt-decorated slip-case, further enclosed in brown cardboard box. This is No. 317 of a Limited Edition of 400 (only 200 of which were made available for sale through regular trade channels) signed by Sofu with brush and antique Chinese charcoal on a sheet of special Japanese aloes-wood perfumed vellum. Below his signature appears his stamp, in red ink containing the first character of his last name. In addition Sofu has signed, inscribed and dated the next page in both English and Japanese and added his stamp, in red, which bears the name Sofu. The emergence of Sofu Teshigahara's approach to ikebana constiuted a revolution in the development of Japanese flower arrangement. The author, who founded Sogetsu School of Flower Arrangement in the 1920s, devoted two years to the collection of materials for the works exhibited in this volume. Several of his leading students assisted in the endeavor. The project took them to locations in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagasaki. Sofu and his group thus traveled from the northernmost reaches of Japan to its southern tip in order to complete this collection. The result is a harmony of flowers and surroundings never before achieved. Lending a rich background to the flower arrangements are famous teahouses, ancient Buddhist statues, renowned ceramic pieces, modern architecture and sculpture, and the natural scenery of Japan.
