Did you ever take a cross-country driving trip with your parents ~ stopping in all those scenic areas and recreational tourist spots with teepees and playgrounds and gift shops? Did you get your kicks on Route 66? This book immediately struck a chord when I saw the map pages... Copies of these maps used to appear as laminated placemats in small-town diners (those places with all the chrome and killer milkshakes!) all across the country, showing all the best places to visit, eat and stay along the way.
This ringbound softcover map book appears to have been published around the early 1960s. Features include Shortest Routes-Best Highways, Recommended Places to Eat and Sleep, and Scenic and Historic Points of Interest in a pre-freeway world. Map pages are arranged by Highway signs, starting with Tollways, such as the Scenic Illinois Tollway, the Indiana Toll Road, the Ohio Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, New York Thruway. After a stop in Washington, D.C., the maps are arranged starting with US 1 in Florida.
Also included are several Trip-Planning Pages (not filled out), Tips for Driving on Superhighways, First Aid instructions, Photo Tips, and Family Games.
The color cover is slightly yellowed with age, and shows a small tape repair at the top. There is a light scuff on the inside front cover and a small grease pencil mark on contents page. The interior pages are clean and unmarked.
This is a wonderful collectible of a world gone by the wayside...where the only thing you saw out the window past your little brother was land, a few cars, a few cows and a teepee or two.
