Cooper, James Fenimore. The Pioneers, or the Sources of the Susquehanna, a Descriptive Tale. London. Printed for T. Allman and C. Daly. No publishers’ date (preface dated 1823), circa 1830-1840, 437 pages. Half leather with green and brown marble boards. Spine with raised gilt bands and leather label.
Good only: some peeling of leather along front hinge and rubbing to edges and corners. Some paper loss to boards along edges and most noticeably a half-inch circular area to front and about a 2 inch strip to back. Boards also slightly warped. Case and text block completely intact and binding tight. Interior clean save for browning to prelims and a dark stain to lower corner of title page. First free end paper partly adhered to flyleaf. Two title pages included, one engraved.
First of the five Leatherstocking Tales, featuring Natty Bumpo, and Cooper’s third book overall. An early English edition in the small one-volume format, printed during Cooper’s lifetime.
