This is the perfect table for the collector who loves authentic early investment quality antiques with superior form, surface, and condition. It was found in a house in Bergen County, New Jersey and the use of walnut, hard pine, and soft pine indicates that it originates from that region. We can't say enough about the delicate appearance and the untouched surface of this table. It is a "best of" in this category. It is a very nice size, perfect for between two windows, behind a sofa, in a hallway, or opened in a room. Its fine lines would make it a perfect addition to any room.
DESCRIPTION:
- A Fine Early 19th Century Tapered Leg Game Table New Jersey Dated 1819.
- A fold out rectangular top over one long drawer resting on finely tapered legs. The top is constructed of walnut and the secondaries are eastern white pine and hard yellow pine. The top is hinged with cast butt hinges and secured to the base with pins. The drawer is dovetailed front and back and the led-in drawer bottom is a single board. The tapered legs are pinned. The walnut top has a beautiful mellow scrubbed patina with traces of the red paint still showing. The entire base including the inside of the swing leg is painted red. This paint is 100% original and 100% untouched. The surface is absolutely outstanding. The date can be seen by removing the drawer as it is on the underside of the top. It is painted in the same original red. You can see the 181 in the pictures and the 9 is behind the drawer runner. The underside of this table is as beautiful as the rest. It is black with age and untouched as well.
- Incredible care has been taken of this table as is evident by its condition. The top is original to the base. The legs have no breaks or repairs. The drawer bottom has a few nails added on the bottom along the back to tighten it for the shrinkage of the single board. There is a hard pine led-in runner on the bottom of the drawer at the center which has a nail added. The drawer runners have exactly the kind of wear you want to see for a table of this age but the drawer still runs smoothly and needs no build up. The drawer pull is secured with a wood pin. It is appropriate for the form, tightly fitted, and early but may or may not be original as the interior of the drawer front is gouged out. We usually see this done to make room for a nut. We don't want to pull the knob off to check it for originality as it may loosen the fit. There was a small break out in the top of the top at the left hinge. It does not go all the way through the top and most likely happened from the table being opened and not support by the swing leg. The original piece was put back and secured with two tiny nails, set below the surface and some fill put in around the spilt. This is an old repair and you have to look to see it. The hinges are original to the top. The top rests nice and flat. The bread board ends have done their job and kept the top from bowing. The legs stand straight. The swing works smoothly.
- 28 3/8" tall x 35 1/2" wide x 17 5/8" deep. (35 1/4" deep when opened).
