Northern Blue Flag (Iris versicolor) Northern Blue Flag is native to the Mid-Atlantic region. This is a great plant for ponds as its naturally found along streams and in standing water. This is one of two native iris growing in these parts. These look great when allowed to for a clump and bloom in mass. Also great for rain gardens. The plant will come to you in a 3.5 inch pot. Soak thoroughly before planting. Water regularly until established and regularly during times of drought. Description: Grows 1 ½ to 2 ½ feet tall, clump forming. Leaves ½ - ¾ inch thick. Large Blue flowers. Culture: Semi-aquatic plant found along streams, lakes marshes etc. Full sun to part sun. Bloom time May - June. Zones 4 - 8. Companion plants: Swamp Milkweed, Skunk Cabbage, Royal Fern Wildlife benefit: Waterfowl like the seeds. Dragonflies perch atop stalks.
