Malachite is a lustrous copper ore with swirling islands of deep green hues. Popularized in modern times in 19th century Europe, it was worn as protection against the "evil eye." Much of today's fine malachite is produced in Arizona, the Urals, and the Congo. In Israel, malachite is extensively mined at Timna, often called King Solomon's Mines. Archeological evidence indicates that the mineral has been mined and smelted at the site for over 3,000 years. Lesser pieces of malachite are smelted into copper, but fine examples such as this stone are reserved for sterling silver jewelry.
