This is a beautiful beaded Native American made pouch or bag. The beading is Athabaskan in nature. I have taken the bag to one of our local specialists in beading to have it appraised. The business I took it to is called Indian Dreams Trading post, located in Tumalo Oregon. The lady that owns the store has won awards for her own personal bead work and is considered an expert in beading. I also had our local Indian Reservation, the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Museum take a look at it and they concurred with the lady at the trading post that the bag is Athabaskan in origin. This is what the beading expert at the trading post had to say.
“THE BAG IS PROBABLY ATHABASKAN IN MAKE. MOST LIKELY MADE SOMEWHERE IN THE LATE 1950'S TO THE EARLY 1960'S. THE LEATHER USED IS MOST LIKELY MOOSE, SINCE THAT PARTICULAR TRIBE OF NATIVE AMERICANS RANGE FROM ALASKA TO THE NORTHERN UNITED STATES. SHE ALSO SAID THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEATHER USED INDICATES THAT IS MOOSE, SINCE IT'S A HEAVY LEATHER AND MOOSE HIDE HAS THAT CHARACTERISTICâ€.
The appraisal was paid for, but for the price I did not get the appraisal in writing.
As you can see from the photos, the bag is heavily beaded and this includes the back as well as the front. I personally feel it’s a very beautiful bag, and highly collectible and unique.
Any collector of this sort of artwork would love to have this to add to their collection.
The beading expert at the trading post I took it to said if she were to sell it through her shop, she would be asking upwards of $1,500.00 for it.
The bag itself is in very good shape. I have not noticed any rips or missing pieces. There is a few small areas on the top edge of the bag where some of the beadwork is missing, but for the age of the bag and the fact that it’s not a museum piece, that it’s been used, it’s understandable it would have a small area of missing beadwork that could possibly be repaired.
Some of the beading appears to be real shell and what materials the other beads are made from would be probably seed type and others.
The bag is lined with what I was told is “trade cloth†in a dark blue and kind of crème color check. The crème color also features small yellow flowers.
I personally am no expert in this field, but in my opinion only, I do believe the evaluation performed by the beading expert from the trading post is true. The beading on the bag does seem to be Athabaskan in origin from the research I have done on it myself. But this is just my opinion, as I said I am not an expert in this field. Item sold as is.
